Ganesh Idol Placement at Wedding Ceremonies
During a recent decor design call with a bride, groom, and their parents, a topic came up that I wanted to share with you all.
As part of my standard questionnaire, I asked the family if they wanted to place a Lord Ganesh idol at the start of the aisle. I noted that in about 90% of the weddings I design, clients choose to place Ganesh right at the aisle entrance. It serves as a great focal point for family photos after everyone gets dressed and waits for the baraat.
The conversation took an interesting turn:
The groom’s mother immediately said, "YES, I would like to have Ganesh."
Right after, the bride’s father said, "NO."
A pin-drop silence fell over the room. Surprised, I asked why not. He explained his reasoning: since Lord Ganesh would already be present at the main ceremony altar/mandap, why would they need an idol at the entrance acting as a Dhwarpal?
Everyone was taken aback by his point. Shortly after, the groom’s mother chimed back in to clarify her preference for having Ganesh present. Seeing the tension, I smoothly transitioned the discussion to the next item on our checklist.
It definitely made me think! I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback: Should we place a Lord Ganesh idol at the entrance of the ceremony aisle, or keep it strictly at the main ceremony altar? What are your thoughts?
